Questions and answers
Files, printing, licensing, the framework, and the honest answer about the illustrations. If yours isn’t here, write to hello@inkwrenstudios.com.
How do I get my files after I buy?
Everything is instant. Buy on Etsy and your files are in your Etsy account under Purchases and reviews the moment payment clears, with a download link emailed to you as well; buy direct on Payhip and the download link is on the confirmation page and in your email. Nothing is made to order and nothing ships. Single-story purchases include all four children — Maya, Leo, Jaylen and Mei — right in the download, so there is nothing to select and no waiting on us. If you bought on a phone, download on a laptop or tablet if you can: phone browsers sometimes hide the file in a downloads folder that is hard to find.
What’s the best way to print these?
Print on US Letter or A4, landscape, at Actual Size or 100% — not “Fit to page”, which shrinks the type. Single-sided is the easiest to assemble; double-sided with short-edge binding works if you want a slimmer book. Plain 24 lb / 90 gsm paper is fine for everyday use. For something a child will hold every day for a month, print on cardstock or laminate the pages and bind with three rings, a comb binding, or a single ring in the top-left corner. A half-size version prints two pages per sheet and makes a nice pocket book for the car or the waiting room.
What do the four children look like?
Every single-story purchase includes all four, so there is nothing to decide before you buy — pick the one your reader will recognise as a stand-in for themselves once the files are in hand, or share more than one. Maya has medium-brown skin and dark curly hair in a top bun. Leo has light skin, freckles and short copper-red hair. Jaylen has deep brown skin and short coily hair with a low fade. Mei is East Asian with a chin-length black bob and bangs. If you are buying for a caseload rather than one child, ten-story packs (one child, ten stories) and the complete library (every story, every child) are also available.
Can I use these with my whole class or caseload?
Yes. Your purchase includes a personal and single-classroom or single-caseload license: one buyer, one classroom or one clinician’s caseload. Print as many copies as that classroom or caseload needs, for as long as you need them. If you’d like to share with colleagues, please have each person buy their own copy, or write to us about a multi-seat or school-wide license — we’re happy to sort one out.
Can I edit the words?
Yes, and we’d encourage it. Every book includes an editable PowerPoint (.pptx) alongside the print-ready PDF. Swap in your child’s name, the actual name of the dentist’s office, the school bus number, or the specific step your school does differently. Open it in PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides. The illustrations stay put; the text boxes are yours. If a font substitutes on your machine, install Atkinson Hyperlegible (it is free) or just pick a clean sans-serif — the layout will hold.
Do you accept returns or exchanges?
Because these are instant digital downloads, we can’t accept returns, exchanges or cancellations once a file has been delivered. What we absolutely will do is fix a problem: if a file won’t open, won’t print correctly, or isn’t what the listing described, write to us and we’ll sort it out or refund it. We’d rather have a happy reader than a sale.
Will there be more stories?
Yes. Pack 1 is ten stories, and we’re writing the next set now — more medical and dental visits, more school-day routines, more of the everyday transitions people ask us for. If there’s a moment you can’t find a book for, tell us. A surprising number of our titles started as someone’s request.
Is this affiliated with Carol Gray or Social Stories?
No. Inkwren Studio is independent and has no affiliation with, endorsement from, or certification by Carol Gray or The Gray Center. We say “social story” in the general sense. What we do claim is specific and checkable: every script we publish is written and audited to follow the ten Social Story criteria Carol Gray established, and we describe that framework compliance honestly in each listing. Credit for the framework is hers; responsibility for our books is ours.
Are the illustrations AI-assisted?
Yes, and we’d rather tell you plainly than let you wonder. Our illustrations are AI-assisted and hand-directed by the studio. We build each character from a fixed reference sheet, art-direct every scene, curate heavily, and then review every single page for consistency and accuracy — the same face, the same clothes, the same sneakers, the same room, page after page — and we correct or re-do anything that drifts. Hands, faces and background details get checked specifically, because a page that looks slightly wrong is worse than no page at all for the reader we’re writing for. Nothing goes in a book that a person here hasn’t looked at and approved.
What ages are these for?
The reading level and illustration style suit roughly ages 3 to 9 — preschool through about third grade — and the books are just as often read aloud by an adult as read independently. Because the text is editable, older readers who need the same rehearsal can get a version with the wording adjusted up.
